After irrigation and wires were removed by local fencing contractor, Steve McCabe (McCabe’s Fencing), clearing the 14-hectare Rānui vineyard took just two weeks for MG Contracting Marlborough Ltd.
The Blenheim company’s innovative custom-designed Elag was in action. Designed by MG’s Matt Gale, Elag combines a German chipper with a locally built hydraulic attachment which grabs each vine, rips it out of the ground and puts it into the chipper.
“You can fire the chips onto the ground or dump them in a pile for landscaping. We did a bit of both at Rānui,” says Olivia Gale.
As it was school holidays, the couple’s three girls earned some pocket money sorting the vineyard posts into metal for scrap, and recyclable wooden posts.

A family affair: Matt, Olivia, Ryleigh, Brooke and Charlotte doing the mahi at Rānui.

Steve, Henry and Lochy from McCabe’s Fencing begin work to remove the vineyard wires and irrigation.
